1. Introduction

An event affecting an exceptionally high proportion of population is known as pandemic. Corona virus outbreak is the recent pandemic we all are facing across the world.

It is a communicable disease which originally started to spread in Wuhan, China, but it later started to spread all over the world. The people who got exposed to corona virus tend to have mild to moderate respiratory illness. Corona virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The most common symptoms are fever, dry cough and tiredness. The main preventive measures are wearing a face mask and maintaining social distancing as much as we can. This corona virus pandemic has some serious effects such as loss of lives, poverty, down in economy, change of lifestyle, mental stress etc. As of 19th July, the total corona virus cases across the world surpassed 14 million with deaths over 6 lakhs. Therefore, the need to do some statistical analysis becomes crucial to make some wise decisions. There are so many researches are in process to find a medicine to this as well.

Top ten countries with highest number of corona virus cases as of 19th July are, United States , Brazil , India , Russia , Peru , South Africa, Mexico , Chile , UK and Iran. The locations are depicted below.

Romania is a country which is located in the Europe. It shares land borders with Bulgaria to the south, Ukraine to the north, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, Moldova to the east and has its opening to the Black Sea. The location is depicted below.

Figure 02: Location of Romania

Figure 02: Location of Romania

It is the 12th-largest country in Europe. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest. Romania ranks 52nd in the Human Development Index and is a developing country. Its annual economic growth rate is 3.5% as of 2020. Romania has a climate that is temperate and continental, with four distinct seasons. It is divided into 41 counties and the municipality of Bucharest. The official language is Romanian. Romania is a secular state and has no state religion. Football is the most popular sport in Romania. It is one of the second world countries as well. The most common causes of death in Romania are cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

There is no any wonder that corona virus has affected Romania too. The virus was confirmed to have reached Romania on 26 February 2020, when the first case in Gorj County was confirmed. On 22 March, the first three deaths were reported in Romania. All three had pre-existing conditions: one was on dialysis, one had terminal lung cancer, and one had diabetes. On 3 July, there were 741 people in institutional quarantine and a further 58,991 in home isolation under medical supervision. As of 18 July, the Romanian Government reports 943,733 tests have been processed. As of 19 July, Romania has 36, 691 confirmed corona virus cases in which 2009 deaths and 22, 488 recoveries are reported.

On 21 February, following a COVID-19 pandemic in Italy, the Romanian government announced a 14-day quarantine for citizens returning from the affected regions. The Romanian government announced several preventive measures including designation of five hospitals as isolation centres for new cases, purchase and placement of thermal scanners in international airports and specially designated lines for passengers coming from areas affected by COVID-19 outbreak, arranged awareness programs etc. On 8 March, the government announced a ban on all indoor or outdoor activities involving the participation of more than 1,000 participants. On 9 March, it announced the cessation of flights, bus transport, rail transport to and from Italy, closed schools and disinfected public places and border closures. On 14 March, the president Klaus Iohannis announced his decision to decree the state of emergency and it was further extended. On 16 March, President Iohannis signed an emergency decree, giving authorities the power to remove, report or close websites spreading fake news about the COVID-19 pandemic, with no opportunity to appeal. The State of Alert replaced the State of Emergency in Romania on 15 May 2020. On 16 June, the State of Alert was extended for an additional 30 days. During the State of Alert period some restrictions regarding operating businesses remain in place. The government also took actions on law breakers as well.

Romania faced down in economy mainly in textile industry. Several factories, shops and offices were closed. Hence, many people starved without jobs. All the sports events and examinations were postponed as well.

The dataset consists of 7 variables namely date, province, country, lat, long, type and cases. The variable type has the categories namely confirmed, recovered and death. There are 336 rows where each 112 rows represent a particular type. The available data are from 22nd of January to 12th of May. Eventhough the dataset has a column named province, there are no any data in it. This dataset does not have multiple latitudes and longitudes as well.

Comparing covid-19 situation of Romania with China

China is the first country that faced corona virus. Therefore i wanted to compare the corona virus pandemic situation of Romania with China.

date province country lat long type cases
1 2020-01-22 Anhui China 31.8257 117.2264 confirmed 1

Figure 38

Figure 39

Figure 39

From the above plot we can say that China has very high number of confiremd cases, deaths and recoveries than Romania. Therefore, we can say that when compared to China, Romania is not severely affected by corona virus.

3. Discussion and Conclusion

From the above analysis , it can be concluded that Romania’s daily number of confirmed cases increased from March to half way through April. The month of April recorded maximum confirmed cases. After that, the daily number of confirmed cases decreases. This decreasing trend is a good sign and the spread can be controlled easily at this stage. The daily number of deaths and recoveries tend to increase continously over the months. Maximum number of deaths and recoveries in a single day was recorded on 8th and 9th of May respectively.

The cumulative corona virus cases count increases continously but the rate of increasing trend is slightly decreasing. The cumulative death count and recovery count are increasing continously. However, the rate of increasing trend of recovery rate is also increasing, which is an advantage. The number of active cases tend to increase until April end. However, from the beginning of May they tend to decrease. At this stage, there is a high possibilty to control the spread easily. The recovery rate have both increasing and decreasing trends. The recovery rate was down around April becuase it is the month with peak confirmed cases. But after that the recovery rate shows an increasing pattern. This shows that the process to control the spread is going good.

Then the Romania corona virus situation is compared to the neighbouring countries such as Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary. Romania is in a worse situation when compared with Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary. However, Romania is in a slightly better situation than Ukraine. After that corona virus situation in Romania is compared with France and Germany, which are in the same continent Europe. The analysis revealed that, France and Germany are severely affected by corona virus than Romania. When compared with the countries US, UK and Italy which are severely affected by corona virus, Romania is in a far better situation than them. Finally, when compared with the situation in China, it can be concluded that Romania is in a much safer situation with high possibilty to control the spread and save lives.

Unfortunately, the data available is upto half way through May and its already 2 months passed. Hence, the analysis and conlusions which are presented in this report can be used to make decisions around May Only. We can not rely on the results of this report now because, anything could have occured within this 2 months period.
